About the Diagnostic Reading Test
Nonsense words eliminate 'guessing'. The test reveals
- confusions between letter names and sounds
eg 'yeb' read as 'yeeb' / 'swip' read as 'swipe' - confusions between the sounds of b, d, p
eg: 'wup' read as 'wub' / 'dran' read as 'bran' - inability to blend s+a+g=sag
- inability to blend 'chunks' Gib+lin=Giblin
- Read (at least twice) the instructions for giving the test
- Practise on a partner or a spouse before you give the test
maf fek
Instruction:
I'm going to show you a word.
Its not a real word; its a silly word.
Show the child 'maf': You (the parent) sound out
each letter sound in turn, pointing to each letter as
you sound it...then say the whole nonsense word...
m...a...f that makes 'maf' - doesn't it? Let's try another one.
Repeat with the second example 'fek'.
Do not start the test until the child understands the task. As the child reads each word from his/her copy the parent records on their own copy exactly what the child says. If the child sees "yeb" but reads "weeb", the parent records "weeb". Do not correct the child. Record what the child says. Use a separate piece of paper. Do not let the child see what you write.
Making sense of your recording
yeb may be misread as:
- web (confusion between the sound and the name of 'y')
- yed (confusion between b/d)
- yeeb (confusion between sound and name of 'e')
- weed (multiple confusions)
Instructions:
