VAS Research

VAS Research is one part of a group, consisting of an Optometrics wing (Byron Harrison), a Reading Research / Lecturing / Assessment wing (VAS Research Pty Ltd.) and a Software Development wing (VAS Systems Pty Ltd.) Because of its access to large numbers of children and its freedom from any association with Education Departments, it is one of the few independent sources of data on literacy levels in Australia.

Lecturing is carried out by Byron Harrison FSMS and Jean Clyde B. Ed., M.Ed. Studs. These two co-developed VAS Theory.

* View the Powerpoint presentation on VAS Theory that explains why large numbers of intelligent students struggle with basic literacy.
* View the data on the reading sub-skill levels of over 2000 children.
* Read submissions made to Government inquiries.
* Read excerpts from the book Reading Through Tears.
(which is available for purchase from the site)
* Read about the new exciting 'Management System'.
* Find answers to your questions in the FAQs.

Phonics Unlimited

Phonics Unlimited previews a new all inclusive phonics based teaching resource. The worksheets are highly structured and sequenced with inbuilt consolidation. The teaching dialogue makes this resource suitable for teachers, aides and parents, who may never have previously taught phonics. Teachers already familiar with teaching phonics will immediately see the worth of the program and will be able to use their own dialogue.

There are a number of separate but complementary components in the series. While all of the components (apart from the Phonics Unlimited Review work sheets) can be used as 'stand alone' resources, it is recommended that all of the components are used in order to yield optimal results.

Components:

* Diagnostic Assessment - finding an entry Unit (pre-test) & as a post-test
* 'Sound Cards' - for introducing a new sound
* 'Code Links' work sheets for learning how to 'blend' using learned sounds
* 'Work Book' - students practise & consolidate what they have learned
* Review work sheets - 2 purposes (revision : interim assessment)
* Spelling work sheets to support the blending of sounds into written words
* Reading work sheets to support sound blending for reading & increase fluency
(includes new and previously learned sight words)
